Mbappe Misses Out on Initial France Olympic Squad, Focuses on Euros?

French football fans were surprised today when Kylian Mbappé, the star striker and 2018 World Cup winner, was left off the initial 25-man training camp roster for the upcoming Paris Olympics.

While this doesn’t definitively exclude him from the final team, it suggests his participation is less certain.

Focus on Euros a Factor?

Head coach Thierry Henry offered some insight, stating, “The list is open to everyone,” but also acknowledged discussions with clubs, hinting that Real Madrid, Mbappé’s expected future club, might be reluctant to release him for the Olympics so soon after the European Championship.

Mbappé himself has expressed a desire to play in the home Olympics, similar to how French rugby star Antoine Dupont prioritized the Olympic Sevens over the Six Nations this year.

Olympic Football Rules Create Uncertainty

Unlike other major sporting events, the Olympic football tournament isn’t on FIFA’s calendar, meaning clubs aren’t obligated to release players. This creates a potential tug-of-war between national teams and clubs, especially for coveted young stars like Mbappé.

Looking Ahead: A Flexible Roster

The Olympic football tournament allows for squads with under-23 players, with the option for three over-age additions. This leaves the door open for Mbappé, but also highlights the potential for a dynamic squad.

Several young players included in the Euro 2024 squad, like Warren Zaire-Emery and Bradley Barcola, are also on the Olympic preliminary list, demonstrating France’s commitment to fostering future talent.

Mbappé’s Decision Still to Come

While his absence from the initial roster raises questions, it doesn’t close the door on Mbappé’s Olympic dreams. Negotiations with his future club and discussions within the French team will likely determine his final participation.

France’s Olympic Schedule

Regardless of Mbappé’s ultimate involvement, Les Bleus will play warm-up matches before their Olympic opener against the United States on July 24th in Marseille.
