Security tight in China and Hong Kong on Tiananmen crackdown anniversary

On the 35th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square crackdown, security forces in China clamped down on any potential commemorations. Access to Tiananmen Square itself was restricted, with the official website announcing closure for the entire day and Chang’an Avenue, the main road bordering the square, closed to pedestrians and cyclists.

Hong Kong Vigil Tradition Silenced

Hong Kong, once a place where large candlelight vigils were held annually, saw a similar tightening of security. Police presence increased around Victoria Park, the traditional vigil site, and performance artist Sanmu Chen was detained for attempting a mime performance near a police van.

These actions come after recent arrests under Hong Kong’s new national security law, with authorities citing online posts linked to June 4th as justification.

A Day of Silence, a Day of Memory

Despite the government’s efforts to control the narrative, the Tiananmen Mothers, a group of survivors and families of victims, spoke out. They criticized the official whitewashing of history, stating, “Thirty-five years have passed, and the authorities remain silent… We cannot accept or tolerate such statements that ignore the facts.”

Taiwan, the only part of the Chinese-speaking world where June 4th can be openly remembered, held a commemoration event in Taipei. Similar events were planned in countries around the world, ensuring that the memory of the Tiananmen Square protests lives on.

International Community Calls for Freedom

Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong echoed concerns about China’s ongoing restrictions on individual rights. She called on China to “cease suppression of freedoms of expression, assembly, media and civil society.”
