Don Jazzy Expresses Concern Over Nigerians’ Reception of Female Musicians

Veteran record producer and music executive, Don Jazzy, has expressed his disappointment over the lack of support for female musicians in Nigeria. The Mavin Records boss lamented that despite the hard work and talent of female artists, they do not receive as much attention and support from Nigerian audiences compared to their male counterparts.

Lack of Support for Female Musicians

Don Jazzy’s comments came in response to a discussion initiated by a social media user with the handle @Lahon199x on the platform X (formerly Twitter). The user highlighted the disparity in the Nigerian music industry, where female artists struggle to gain recognition at home despite their potential to achieve global success.

 Social Media Concerns

The netizen, @Lahon199x, pointed out that while female artists often dominate or stand on equal footing with their male counterparts in other countries, the situation in Nigeria is markedly different. He wrote, “Nigerians in general are still not receptive to female music. You will see female dominating or at least equal to the men in other countries’ music industry. But in Nigeria? Our female artistes have more chances of being A-list globally than being A-list in Nigeria.”

Don Jazzy’s Response

Reposting the tweet, Don Jazzy added his own thoughts, stating, “And it’s so sad. The women put in soooo much work.” His remarks underscore the frustration felt by many in the industry regarding the persistent gender disparity in music reception and support in Nigeria.

 A Call for Change

The exchange has sparked conversations about the need for greater recognition and support for female musicians in Nigeria. Industry stakeholders and fans alike are encouraged to actively promote and appreciate the contributions of female artists, ensuring they receive the acknowledgment and success they deserve both locally and globally.
