Pedestrian Hit and Killed by METRO Bus in Downtown Houston

A pedestrian who was hit and killed by a METRO bus in downtown Houston Friday morning has been identified as a city employee.

Details of the Accident

Investigators said the incident happened near Rusk and Smith just before 7:40 a.m. Lt. Tim McClelland with the METRO Police Department reported that the pedestrian was in the crosswalk at the intersection and had the right of way. The bus, operated by First Transit, turned onto Rusk as the light turned green, fatally hitting the victim.

 Identification and Response

Officials identified the victim as Damilola Matuluko, who had worked for the city’s HR Operations Employee Relations team since December 2023. “Although Damilola had only been with the HR Department for a short time, she had become a beloved and impactful team member. She will be sincerely missed by her colleagues in the City of Houston,” COH HR Director Jane Cheeks said in a statement.

 Investigation

McClelland stated that the district attorney’s office is investigating to determine if any charges will be filed. When asked if the rainy weather on Friday had any impact on the crash, McClelland said it is still under investigation. The contract driver of the bus is cooperating with investigators. There were reportedly two passengers on the bus, but no other injuries were reported.

The City of Houston confirmed the name of the woman killed was Damilola Matuluko. According to the city, Matuluko was a member of the City of Houston HR Operations Employee Relations team, supporting the Houston Public Works Department. Her unexpected death has left a significant impact on her colleagues and the broader city community.

Ongoing Investigation

HPD commanders are on the scene of the fatal crash and have indicated that more information will be provided as it becomes available. The investigation continues to determine the factors contributing to this tragic accident.
