South Africa’s Election Portal Resumes After Brief Glitch

Live updates of partial results from South Africa’s parliamentary election reappeared on the electoral commission’s website after a technical glitch caused a disruption of at least two hours. The glitch occurred early in the morning, briefly leaving the portal blank at 06:08 a.m. London time. However, by 08:23 a.m., the results were once again visible, as monitored by CNBC.

Impact on African National Congress

The partial results are being closely scrutinized amid early signs that the African National Congress (ANC), the liberation party of Nelson Mandela, might lose its parliamentary majority for the first time in 30 years. This would be a significant shift in South African politics, where the ANC has maintained dominance since the end of apartheid.

Technical Glitch Addressed

The electoral commission did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment on the interruption. Reuters reported that the glitch was due to a technical issue that technicians at the results center in Midrand, north of Johannesburg, were working to resolve.

Current Election Results

Once the portal was back online, it showed the ANC receiving 41.86% of the votes counted so far, which is 55.63% of the total ballots. The Democratic Alliance (DA) was at 23.67%, and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) secured 19.98%.

Implications of a Decline in ANC Support

If the final results are close to the current preliminary 42%, it would represent a significant decline for the ANC, which received 57.5% of the vote in the 2019 election. This drop in support would likely force incumbent President Cyril Ramaphosa to negotiate for a coalition government, introducing political uncertainty that could impact South Africa’s economic prospects.

Political and Economic Ramifications

A coalition government could lead to a period of instability as new political alliances are formed and policy directions are negotiated. This uncertainty has potential implications for investor confidence and economic stability in South Africa, as the country navigates through this significant political transition.
