Minister of Women Affairs, Mrs Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has escalated her concerns by petitioning the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and seeking a court injunction to halt the proposed mass marriage orchestrated by the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji.
Controversial Initiative:
Amidst public outcry, Speaker Sarkindaji stirred controversy by announcing plans to marry off 100 orphaned girls from Mariga Local Government Area, who lost their parents to banditry attacks, as part of his constituency projects scheduled for May 24. The initiative, purportedly aimed at alleviating poverty, has ignited debates on ethical and legal grounds.
Unacceptable Proposal:
Expressing vehement opposition, Minister Kennedy-Ohanenye labeled the plan as “unacceptable” and emphasized the necessity for a thorough investigation. She raised critical concerns regarding consent, the girls’ ages, and the identities of the prospective bridegrooms. The Minister stressed the need to prioritize the girls’ well-being and future prospects, urging a halt to the proceedings until these inquiries are conducted.
