In a recent development, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the September 21 governorship election in Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, is under scrutiny for alleged abuse of the Nigerian currency, the naira. A coalition of civil society organisations, operating under the Network of Civil Society Organisations in Nigeria, has accused Okpebholo of violating the Central Bank of Nigeria Act of 2007, which deems naira abuse and mutilation as punishable offences.
Petition Lodged with EFCC
The coalition lodged a formal complaint with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) against Okpebholo. The petition, dated May 2, 2024, and addressed to the EFCC chairman, was signed by the group’s National Coordinator, Victor Kalu, and National Secretary, Ali Abacha.
Allegations and Legal Consequences
The coalition claimed that Senator Okpebholo was captured in a viral video engaging in naira abuse and mutilation, thereby violating the CBN Act of 2007. They commended the EFCC for its swift response in similar cases involving prominent individuals like Mr Okuneye Idris Olarewaju (Bobrisky) and Mr Pascal Okechukwu (Cubana Chief Priest),
Call for Accountability
While praising the EFCC’s actions, the coalition demanded prompt investigation and legal action against all individuals caught abusing the naira in viral videos, emphasizing that no one is above the law. They specifically called for an inquiry into Senator Monday Okpebholo’s conduct, stressing that as a public representative, he should be held accountable for his actions.
