During his six years of service, he served as a combat journalist, completing tours of duty in Japan, Okinawa, and Vietnam during the Vietnam War.

After his discharge from the Marines, Anderson pursued his passion for journalism, earning dual degrees in journalism and mass communication, as well as political science, from Iowa State University in 1974. He embarked on a career with the Associated Press (AP), reporting from diverse regions such as Asia and Africa before being appointed as the AP’s chief Middle Eastern correspondent in Lebanon in 1983.
Tragically, Anderson’s journalistic pursuits were interrupted when he was abducted on March 16, 1985, by Shia Hezbollah militants of the Islamic Jihad Organization in Beirut. For six years and nine months, he endured captivity, enduring beatings, solitary confinement, and the constant threat of violence. Despite the ordeal, Anderson remained resilient, finding solace in his faith and his determination to maintain his dignity.

Upon his release in 1991, Anderson resumed his journalistic endeavors, but his experiences in captivity led him to advocate for press freedom and humanitarian causes.
