Connor O’Leary to Represent Japan in Surfing at Paris 2024 Olympics

Australian-born surfer Connor O’Leary announced on Wednesday that he has been selected to represent Japan at the Paris 2024 Olympics, following his decision to switch his allegiance to his mother’s native country last year.

Securing a Bonus Spot

O’Leary, hailing from the south Sydney suburb of Cronulla, was awarded a third men’s spot by the Nippon Surfing Association, thanks to Japan’s victory in a qualification event at Huntington Beach in 2022. This bonus spot is significant as most teams are typically limited to two surfers per gender at the Olympics.

A Valuable Addition to Team Japan

Known for his powerful surfing style as a goofy-footer (right foot forward), O’Leary excels in challenging waves, including the venue for the Olympics at Teahupo’o in Tahiti. His inclusion in the Japan team alongside Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medalist Kanoa Igarashi and Reo Inaba is expected to bolster their chances at Paris 2024.

Embracing Multicultural Identity

O’Leary, who finished 11th on the professional world championship tour last year, expressed his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to represent Japan. He has embraced his dual national identity, acknowledging both his Australian and Japanese heritage, which he previously felt compelled to downplay during his upbringing in Cronulla.

Celebrating Diversity

In a reflection on his journey, O’Leary emphasized the significance of multiculturalism and the pride he now takes in his diverse background. His decision to embrace his Japanese heritage serves as a testament to the richness of cultural diversity and the importance of celebrating one’s identity.

As O’Leary prepares to compete under the Japanese flag at Paris 2024, he embodies the spirit of unity and inclusivity, showcasing the power of sport to transcend boundaries and bring people together.
