Exclusive: Mavin Records Acquisition by UMG Nears Finalization

In a groundbreaking move, Mavin Records, the brainchild of Nigerian music producer Don Jazzy, is set to join forces with Universal Music Group (UMG), pending regulatory approval. The deal, expected to conclude by the end of the third quarter of 2024, emphasizes the increasing global significance of African music and artists.

Founded in 2012, Mavin Records has emerged as a powerhouse in the African music scene, boasting a roster of influential artists such as Rema, Ayra Starr, Crayon, Ladipoe, and others. The undisclosed financial details of the acquisition only add to the intrigue surrounding this partnership.

UMG’s strategic investment in Mavin Records underscores the rising global appeal of African music. The collaboration aims to maintain Mavin’s operational independence, ensuring the label can continue its crucial role in discovering and nurturing new talents without external interference.

Both Don Jazzy and COO Tega Oghenejobo will retain their leadership roles, steering the company into this exciting new chapter. Don Jazzy, expressing his enthusiasm, sees the partnership with UMG as an opportunity to expand Mavin’s reach not only in Africa but globally.

Lucian Grainge, the chairman and CEO of UMG, shares this optimism, stating that the collaboration with Don Jazzy, Tega, and the Mavin Global team is a perfect venture for mutual growth.

However, the acquisition comes with notable implications for Mavin’s artists, particularly regarding their use of music on social platforms like TikTok. Due to an existing agreement between UMG and TikTok, artists under Mavin Records will face restrictions when using their songs on the popular platform.

As Mavin Records embarks on this transformative journey with Universal Music Group, the industry watches closely, anticipating the harmonious blend of African creativity and global recognition that this union promises to bring.
