President Donald Trump has granted TikTok another 90-day extension, pushing back the deadline for the app’s sale or ban in the United States to September 17, 2025.
This marks the third delay in enforcing a law passed last year that requires the app’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell TikTok or face a complete U.S. ban. The move comes amid growing criticism that the Trump administration is undermining national security laws passed by Congress—concerns the president appears to be brushing off in favor of political and social influence.
TikTok Thanks Trump for “Leadership and Support”
In a statement issued shortly after the announcement, TikTok expressed gratitude:
“We are grateful for President Trump’s leadership and support,” the company said, noting it is continuing talks with Vice President J.D. Vance’s Office to finalize a deal that satisfies national security concerns.
The extension comes as 170 million Americans continue to use TikTok, making the app a major force in entertainment, culture, and even political messaging.
A Law Still on the Books
Despite the extension, the law mandating TikTok’s ban or divestment remains in force. The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the legislation just days before it was due to be enacted in January.
The law was passed over concerns that ByteDance could be compelled to share U.S. user data with the Chinese government, a claim TikTok has repeatedly denied.
While the company has insisted on its independence and pledged to protect American users’ data, lawmakers say ownership by a PRC-based company poses too great a risk.
Political Whiplash: Trump’s TikTok Reversal
Trump’s handling of TikTok has shifted dramatically. During his first term, he aggressively pushed for the app to be sold to a U.S. company—at one point backing a deal involving Oracle and Walmart. But by late 2023, Trump reversed course and adopted a pro-TikTok stance, even crediting the platform for his 2024 election win.
“I have a warm spot in my heart for TikTok,” Trump said in December. “I won youth by 34 points.”
This claim is disputed by exit polls, which show younger voters still leaned heavily toward Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.
Critics Slam the Delay
Democrats and national security experts have not taken the delay lightly.
“Once again, the Trump administration is flouting the law and ignoring its own national security findings,” said Senator Mark Warner, Vice Chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee.
“An executive order can’t sidestep the law, but that’s exactly what the president is trying to do.”
Warner emphasized that TikTok’s Chinese ownership still poses risks, regardless of its popularity or political utility.
Beijing Still Holds the Cards
A deal for TikTok’s sale would likely need approval from Chinese regulators, making the process even more complex. Beijing has previously introduced export restrictions on algorithms and technologies like those used by TikTok, essentially giving itself veto power over any sale.
What Happens Next?
For now, TikTok gets a temporary lifeline. But as the September deadline looms, pressure will mount on ByteDance to finalize a divestiture or face being shut out of one of its largest markets.
While some speculate that the extension is a way for Trump to leverage TikTok’s influence with younger voters, others worry that the ongoing delays may erode the credibility of national security policy and open the door to further politicization of digital platforms.
Bottom Line
TikTok remains in limbo—neither sold nor banned, but living on borrowed time. Whether Trump’s 90-day extension is a calculated move to court favor or a genuine effort to ensure a smooth transition remains unclear. What is clear: the battle over TikTok’s future is far from over, and what happens by September 17 could reshape tech, trade, and trust between Washington, Beijing, and Silicon Valley.
