Former England captain Michael Vaughan has expressed disbelief at Ben Stokes’ decision to field first in the opening Test against India at Headingley, after the visitors surged to a dominant 359-3 at stumps on Day One.
Under clear skies, with warm weather and a docile pitch offering little for bowlers, England elected to bowl a move that immediately raised eyebrows, especially as India’s Shubman Gill (127*) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (101) punished the English attack with centuries.
“I am an old-school traditionalist,” Vaughan told BBC’s Test Match Special. “Here at Leeds, when the sun is shining and the pitch is dry, you bat.”
A Bold Toss Call Amid Flat Conditions
Stokes’ choice to insert India first seemed rooted in tactical aggression, a hallmark of the Bazball era, but it may have backfired as England’s bowlers failed to make early inroads.
Despite the decision appearing questionable, Gill himself admitted he would have bowled first under the same circumstances—an interesting nod to how pitch readings can deceive.
A History of Bowling First Under Stokes
Since Stokes took over as Test captain in 2022, England has routinely chosen to field first. Of the last nine home Tests where England won the toss, they’ve bowled first in eight—winning six and nearly clinching a seventh if not for rain in the 2023 Ashes at Old Trafford.
Even at Headingley, recent history supports that choice: the last six Tests at the ground were all won by teams that bowled first. So statistically, England’s decision wasn’t without precedent.
Yet Vaughan argued that conditions on Friday morning should have dictated a different approach.
“You can’t make today’s decision based on what worked years ago,” Vaughan said. “Look at your team today—England’s strength is in the batting, and there’s inexperience in the bowling. You’ve got to weigh that.”
England’s Bowling Falls Short
England’s bowlers lacked potency under the sun-baked surface, as India cruised with minimal resistance. Jaiswal’s 101 laid the platform, and Gill’s unbeaten 127 as stand-in captain extended the lead well into dangerous territory.
Fast bowling coach Tim Southee, defending England’s toss call, said the green tinge on the pitch a day earlier influenced the decision.
“With the colour of the wicket yesterday and some lingering moisture, we thought any help for the bowlers would be early this morning. Clearly, it didn’t work out,” Southee admitted.
When Toss Decisions Go Wrong
The cricket world still remembers England captains making infamous decisions to bowl first—like Nasser Hussain in Brisbane (2002) or David Gower at Headingley (1989) both leading to massive first-innings totals by Australia.
Even Stokes himself asked New Zealand to bat first at Trent Bridge in 2022, where the Kiwis posted 553, only for England to chase down the target in stunning Bazball fashion.
It’s Not Over Yet
Vaughan acknowledged that it’s too early to write off the strategy entirely. The real test, he says, will come when India’s lethal pace weapon, Jasprit Bumrah, gets the ball in his hand.
“We won’t know if this pitch is truly flat until we see Bumrah bowl on it,” Vaughan added. “He’s the kind of bowler who can make anything happen.”
What Comes Next?
India heads into Day Two in full control, thanks to their commanding top-order performance. England’s response with the bat—especially under Bumrah’s examination—will determine whether Stokes’ decision was a masterstroke or a miscalculation.
But as Vaughan summed it up:
“Today, England gambled. And unless they bowl India out quickly tomorrow, it could prove to be a costly roll of the dice.”
