Liverpool have made a bold statement in the transfer market, sealing the blockbuster signing of German playmaker Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for a club-record £116 million. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder joins the Reds on a five-year deal that will keep him at Anfield until at least 2030.
The package includes a guaranteed £100m upfront, with a further £16m in performance-related add-ons. Should those add-ons be triggered, Wirtz would surpass Chelsea’s 2023 deal for Enzo Fernandez (£107m), becoming the most expensive signing in British football history.
“I want to win everything, every year,” said Wirtz after completing his medical on Friday. “This is a new adventure for me, and I’m excited to join such a historic club. Liverpool is the perfect place to grow and challenge myself.”
An Elite Talent with a World-Class Ceiling
Wirtz arrives at Liverpool with 57 goals and 44 assists in 197 appearances for Leverkusen, having debuted at just 17. Known for his vision, technical control, and intelligent playmaking in tight spaces, Wirtz was the Bundesliga’s most effective dribbler last season.
Operating primarily as a No. 10, he also showed flexibility by drifting to the left and impacting games from wide areas. His performances helped make Leverkusen one of Europe’s most exciting sides, and his leadership qualities have earned praise despite his youth.
“Even early in his Bundesliga career, he carried himself like a leader,” said German football analyst Constantin Eckner. “He may not be the loudest voice, but his presence is felt.”
A Superstar Signing to Define a New Era
This is Liverpool’s second major signing of the summer, following right-back Jeremie Frimpong (£29.5m), also from Leverkusen. Both signings are believed to have been personally endorsed by new head coach Arne Slot, who is building a squad to challenge domestically and in Europe.
Sporting director Richard Hughes, in his first full transfer window at the helm, is driving an ambitious recruitment strategy to keep Liverpool at the top after last season’s Premier League title triumph.
“Last season was amazing,” Wirtz added. “I want to help the team go even further—win the league again, and make a deep run in the Champions League.”
Tactical Fit: Where Will Wirtz Play?
Wirtz’s arrival opens up several tactical questions. If Slot sticks with the 4-2-3-1 formation used last season, Wirtz could be deployed directly behind the striker. But that would leave Dominik Szoboszlai or Alexis Mac Allister competing for fewer spots.
Alternatively, Wirtz could drift wide or even play as a false nine, a role once made iconic by Roberto Firmino, especially if Liverpool rotate Diogo Jota or Darwin Nunez out of the center-forward role.
His versatility could allow Slot to use him in multiple systems, including a 4-3-3 or even a 3-4-2-1 if the team shifts formations mid-season.
“Wirtz is more or less the fully-formed article,” said German journalist Raphael Honigstein. “He’s a superstar in the making with class and poise. The Premier League will be a test of his physicality, but he has the temperament to handle it.”
Why Liverpool Are Spending Big Now
Liverpool’s quiet summer in 2024 raised eyebrows, but it ultimately ended with the Premier League title under Arne Slot’s debut campaign. This time, they’re not taking any chances.
The club is pursuing early signings to ensure full squad integration before the season begins, especially with Club World Cup obligations and financial fair play timelines. Talks are already underway to secure Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez for £40m, and a new center-back and striker are also on the agenda.
“Preparation is key,” said Slot. “We want players ready and firing from the first matchday.”
What This Means for Liverpool’s Ambitions
With Wirtz, Liverpool have landed a generational talent who can become the heartbeat of their midfield for years to come. He brings flair, youth, and end-product—qualities that will allow the Reds to not only defend their domestic crown but push for Champions League glory once again.
“Every game in the Premier League is big,” Wirtz said. “But every pitch is perfect, and I want to enjoy every minute.”
As Liverpool look to build a new dynasty under Slot, Florian Wirtz may just be the face of the future at Anfield.
