NAQS, established in 2017, is mandated to prevent the entry and spread of foreign pests and diseases while promoting sanitary measures for agricultural imports and exports. The agency’s recent actions align with the Renewed Hope Agenda, aiming to put more food on Nigerian tables by clamping down on smuggling practices.

Highlighting the paramount concern for food security, the agency emphasized its commitment to preventing agricultural commodities from being unlawfully taken out of the country. The crackdown not only targets stabilizing food prices but also aims to bring transparency and fairness to the agricultural supply chain.
Rigorous Border Surveillance: Tackling Smuggling Menace Head-On
To combat illegal smuggling and hoarding, NAQS is enhancing surveillance and control measures at all entry and exit points. Officers are diligently conducting inspections and monitoring activities to ensure that no agricultural commodity is unlawfully exported, reflecting a comprehensive approach to recent challenges in the agricultural sector.
Public Involvement Urged: Reporting Suspicious Activities
Dr. Godwin Audu, the acting Comptroller-General of NAQS, urged the public to report any suspicious activities related to hoarding or smuggling of agricultural commodities. Community participation and collaboration are deemed vital for the success of this campaign.
Government’s Strong Stand: Intensifying Efforts Nationwide
The Federal Government, responding to the surge in food prices, is intensifying efforts to curb hoarding and smuggling. Recently, the Nigeria Customs Service intercepted 15 trailers loaded with food items attempting to leave the country. Additionally, a high-level committee, comprising key officials, has been set up to crack down on traders hoarding grains.
National Strategy Unveiled: No Importation of Food to Address Economic Hardship
In a significant development, the Federal Government has ruled out the importation of food as part of its strategy to address the high costs of foodstuffs and economic challenges. This decision was reached during an emergency meeting involving President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, and state governors at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.
