Health Workers’ Nationwide Strike Leads to Tragic Outcome for Accident Victim

Temitope Ayeni shares his heartbreaking journey of losing sight due to delayed medical care during a health workers’ strike.

The Fateful Accident in Calabar

Temitope Ayeni, a visually impaired student of Yaba College of Technology, reveals the harrowing details of a life-altering accident that occurred on November 23, 2013, in Calabar, Cross River State. Working as a customer service engineer dealing with Automated Teller Machines, Ayeni suffered severe injuries, including damage to his upper head and jaw.

Strike Compounds Tragedy

In an interview with PUNCH Metro, Ayeni explains that the unfortunate incident coincided with a nationwide strike by medical workers, leading to a delayed access to crucial medical treatment. The consequences were dire, as the delay allowed an infection to compromise his eyesight.

Impact on Vision and the Need for Urgent Medical Attention

After the accident, Ayeni was eventually taken to Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). However, the damage was already done, and he was informed that the delayed attention in Calabar had resulted in an infection affecting both eyes. Now, Ayeni requires medical attention not only for his compromised vision but also for his jaw and teeth.

A Life Devoted to Helping Others Despite Personal Struggles

Despite his own challenges, Ayeni volunteers by teaching visually impaired students about computer use in both private and public schools. He is also involved in audio productions for radio stations.

Call for Support and Assistance

Expressing his desire to return to school for further studies, Ayeni seeks financial support for necessary surgical operations. While grateful for assistance from religious leaders, he emphasizes the need for more help from well-meaning Nigerians to overcome his medical and educational challenges.

Healthcare System Paralyzed by Nationwide Strike

The article highlights the broader context of Ayeni’s tragic story, referencing a PUNCH report on July 26, 2023, stating that medical services in government hospitals across Nigeria were paralyzed due to the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors’ indefinite strike. Patients faced delays in accessing care, leading to increased challenges for individuals like Ayeni.

NARD’s Indefinite Strike and its Ramifications

The indefinite strike by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors was initiated due to the Federal Government’s failure to meet their demands. While consultant medical and dental doctors, nurses, and other health workers attempted to provide services during the strike, patients experienced disruptions and difficulties in obtaining timely medical care. Some were even forced to seek healthcare in alternative facilities.
