Prominent Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu has openly criticized the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, over the worsening environmental conditions in Lagos , especially the disturbing smell that has overwhelmed parts of the state.
In a bold statement shared online, Yesufu said, “You cannot insult and attack your way out of SMELL in Lagos. Get to work and fix it.” Her comments are in response to recent defensive remarks from Wahab and government officials who appeared to dismiss or attack public complaints about the city’s environmental issues.
Lagosians Struggle with Unbearable Stench
Many residents have taken to social media in recent weeks to voice their frustrations about the foul smell and deteriorating sanitary conditions across Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub. The stench, believed to be coming from blocked drainages, overflowing waste, and poor environmental sanitation, has made daily life uncomfortable for many.
Despite the growing complaints, there appears to be limited visible government response. Instead, some officials have reportedly chosen to deflect blame or shut down criticism.
Aisha Yesufu Urges Leadership, Not Excuses
Known for her fearless activism and public advocacy, Yesufu did not mince words. She urged Wahab to stop dismissing public outcry and instead focus on delivering solutions.
“Leadership is about responsibility, not excuses,” she emphasized.
A Wake-Up Call for the Lagos Government?
