José Mujica, affectionately known as “Pepe,” passed away on May 13, 2025, at the age of 89. A former guerrilla fighter and the 40th President of Uruguay from 2010 to 2015, Mujica was renowned for his modest lifestyle and progressive policies. He died at his rural home in Rincón del Cerro, Montevideo, after a prolonged battle with esophageal cancer. His wife, Lucía Topolansky, confirmed his passing, and the government declared three days of national mourning in his honor.
From Guerrilla Fighter to President
In the 1960s and 70s, Mujica was a member of the Tupamaros, a Marxist guerrilla group engaged in urban warfare against the Uruguayan government. He was arrested multiple times and spent over a decade in solitary confinement during the military dictatorship. After Uruguay’s return to democracy, Mujica transitioned into politics, co-founding the left-wing Movimiento de Participación Popular and later joining the Broad Front coalition.
A Presidency Marked by Humility and Reform
As president, Mujica implemented significant reforms, including the legalization of abortion, same-sex marriage, and marijuana. He also strengthened labor laws and welcomed Syrian refugees. Renowned for his humility, he donated 90% of his salary to charity and lived modestly on a small farm, earning the nickname “the poorest president in the world.
A Beloved Leader
Mujica’s funeral in Montevideo was attended by thousands of mourners, including current President Yamandú Orsi and former leaders such as Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Gabriel Boric. The procession featured emotional displays, with citizens weeping, raising their arms, and marching behind his flag-draped casket. His remains will be cremated and interred near his farmhouse, alongside his dog, Manuela, as per his wishes.
Legacy and Impact
Mujica’s legacy combines radical idealism with pragmatic governance. He remained politically active as a senator until 2018 and continued to inspire many across Latin America, particularly the youth. His life and work serve as a testament to the power of humility, integrity, and dedication to social justice.
