Gérard Depardieu Found Guilty of Sexual Assault

French actor Gérard Depardieu, 76, has been convicted of sexually assaulting two women during the filming of Les Volets Verts in 2021. A Paris court sentenced him to 18 months in prison, suspended, meaning he will not serve time unless he reoffends. He was also fined €29,040 and ordered to be listed on France’s national sex offender registry.

The Allegations

The victims, a 54-year-old set dresser and a 34 year-old assistant director, testified that Depardieu groped them during the film shoot. One described feeling terrified as he laughed during the assault. The court found their accounts credible and consistent, supported by witness testimony and other evidence.

Depardieu’s Defense and Appeal

Depardieu denied the allegations, claiming he did not understand the concept of sexual assault. His lawyer announced plans to appeal the verdict, arguing that the accusations were unfounded and criticizing the court’s handling of investigative aspects.

Industry Impact

This conviction marks a significant moment for the #MeToo movement in France, where the film industry has long been resistant to addressing sexual misconduct. The case has prompted discussions about accountability and the need for cultural change in the industry.

Ongoing Legal Matters

Depardieu faces additional legal challenges, including a rape trial scheduled for later this year. He has been accused by multiple women over the years, with some cases still under investigation.
