At 48 years old, WWE legend and actor John Cena has opened up about how a skin cancer diagnosis profoundly altered his outlook on life. In a recent interview, Cena described the experience as a “sobering” wake-up call that led him to prioritize his health and well-being.
A Sobering Wake-Up Call
Cena’s journey began with two separate diagnoses of skin cancer. The first occurred when a spot on his right pectoral muscle tested positive for cancer; a year later, another spot on his right shoulder was also found to be cancerous. These incidents prompted Cena to reevaluate his lifestyle and health practices.
Embracing Sun Protection
Prior to his diagnosis, Cena admitted to neglecting sun protection, a common issue among men. He grew up in Massachusetts and later lived in Florida, where he enjoyed the sun without using sunscreen regularly. This neglect contributed to his skin cancer risk. Following his diagnoses, Cena made sunscreen application a daily habit, likening it to brushing his teeth. He partnered with Neutrogena for their “Sunscreen You Can’t See” campaign, aiming to normalize sun protection among men and encourage proactive skin care habits.
Advocating for Men’s Health
Cena emphasized the importance of routine dermatological check-ups and early detection. He noted that men are less likely than women to visit dermatologists, often delaying care until issues become noticeable. By sharing his story, Cena hopes to inspire other men to take their health seriously and adopt preventive measures.
A Changed Perspective
Reflecting on his experiences, Cena acknowledged that the diagnoses were unsettling, but they ultimately led to positive changes in his life. He now views health as a priority and encourages others to adopt simple habits, like daily sunscreen use, to protect themselves.
