US-China Trade Talks in Geneva End Without Deal But Dialogue Remains Open!

Top economic officials from the United States and China concluded two days of high-stakes negotiations in Geneva on Sunday, aiming to ease a trade war that has disrupted global markets and strained bilateral relations. While no formal agreements were announced, U.S. President Donald Trump described the discussions as a “total reset” and claimed “great progress” had been made, though specifics remain unclear.

The talks, held at the U.N. ambassador’s villa in Cologny, Switzerland, brought together U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and Public Security Minister Wang Xiaohong. This marked the first face-to-face engagement on trade under Trump’s second term, following months of escalating tariffs that have effectively halted bilateral trade.

Since April, the U.S. has imposed tariffs totaling 145% on Chinese imports, prompting Beijing to retaliate with 125% tariffs on American goods. These measures have significantly disrupted global supply chains and contributed to market volatility. Investors are cautiously optimistic that even modest tariff reductions could restore confidence.

President Trump has suggested the possibility of reducing U.S. tariffs to around 80%, signaling a potential opening for compromise. However, Chinese state media emphasized Beijing’s firm stance, rejecting any proposals that would compromise its core principles or global equity.

While the Geneva talks did not yield a concrete deal, they represent a significant step toward de-escalating tensions between the world’s two largest economies. Analysts believe that continued dialogue and incremental progress could pave the way for a more stable global economic environment.
