Borno Moves Against Social Vices With Statewide Alcohol Ban!

In a bold and sweeping move aimed at restoring public order, Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has outlawed the sale of alcohol throughout the state. The announcement, made on Tuesday at the Council Chambers of the Government House in Maiduguri, signals the Governor’s growing frustration with what he described as a “surge in lawlessness and moral decay” in the region.

Flanked by top military brass, police representatives, and civil security heads, Zulum inaugurated a new task force charged with dismantling illegal establishments—including brothels, unlicensed hotels, and makeshift shelters harboring criminal elements.

In a blunt address, Zulum did not mince words. “Let’s be honest with ourselves,” he said. “Many of these problems—drug use, prostitution, theft—are being enabled by those who should be protecting the people. Some are former security operatives, others are still in service.”

He stressed that no individual, regardless of status or uniform, would be exempt from the state’s push to cleanse Maiduguri of its growing security challenges. “There must be no sacred cows,” he declared, calling for accountability within the ranks of both current and former security personnel.

According to the Governor, the decision to ban alcohol stems from a troubling pattern: a spike in cult-related violence, gang rivalries, and substance abuse—all of which he links to a broader collapse in moral values and security discipline.

Zulum claimed that even civilians were being lured into radicalism and vice under the influence of compromised officials. “We’re not just battling terrorists,” he said, “we’re also fighting the internal rot that fuels their growth.”

The newly empowered committee, now expanded to include members of the military, police, Civil Defence Corps, and Civilian JTF, has been given the green light to act decisively against what the Governor described as “urban insurgency and social disintegration.”

As Borno enters this new phase of internal cleansing, the Governor’s message is loud and clear: the battle for peace will be fought not only on the battlefield, but in the streets, bars, and backrooms of the state capital.
