Enugu Hosts Nigeria’s Largest Tech Conference: ‘Coal to Code’!

Enugu, once renowned for its coal-driven industrial legacy, is now at the forefront of Nigeria’s digital transformation. The 2025 Enugu Tech Festival, themed “Coal to Code,” commenced on May 7, marking a significant shift from the state’s historical identity to a future anchored in technology and innovation.

Holding at the International Conference Center in Enugu from 7th-8th May, 2025, the festival has drawn over 5,000 participants, including tech enthusiasts, startups, investors, and policymakers from across the nation . The event features keynote speeches, panel discussions, workshops, hackathons, and exhibitions, all aimed at fostering a robust digital economy.

Dr. Bosun Tijani, Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, lauded the festival as the most significant technology conference in the country’s history. He emphasised Enugu’s rapid progress in digital infrastructure and innovation, stating, “Enugu is showing how this should and will be done. I have never been to a technology conference in Nigeria that is this big” .

Governor Peter Mbah highlighted the state’s commitment to leveraging technology for economic growth. He pointed to initiatives like the West Africa Stargate (WASGate) project, which includes data centers and startup incubators, and the Digital Literacy for All (DL4ALL) program, aiming to equip over one million residents with digital skills by 2027 .

The festival also serves as a platform for young innovators to showcase their ideas, with pitch competitions and networking opportunities designed to connect them with potential investors and mentors. Dr. Prince Lawrence Ezeh, Enugu’s Commissioner for Innovation, Science, and Technology, announced that the Enugu Tech Festival will become an annual event, further solidifying the state’s position as a tech hub .

As Enugu transitions from its coal-mining past to a future driven by code and innovation, the 2025 Enugu Tech Festival stands as a testament to the state’s vision and determination to lead Nigeria into the digital age.
