In a bold move to future-proof its education system, the United Arab Emirates will roll out Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a core subject in all public schools starting from the next academic year. The subject will be introduced across every stage of government education — from kindergarten through Grade 12.
The announcement was made on Sunday by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, via the social media platform X. He emphasized that this initiative aligns with the country’s broader vision to prepare future generations for an evolving global landscape shaped by emerging technologies.
“This decision is part of the UAE’s long-term plans to prepare our children for a future different from our own — a future that demands new skills, new mindsets, and a deep understanding of transformative technologies,” Sheikh Mohammed stated.
Sarah bint Yousef Al Amiri, Minister of Education, outlined the structure of the new curriculum, which will focus on six key pillars:
- Data and algorithms!
- Software applications!
- Ethical awareness in AI!
- Real-world AI applications!
- AI-driven innovation and project design!
- AI policies and societal engagement!
The Ministry of Education will also equip educators with a comprehensive toolkit that includes adaptable lesson plans, interactive activities, and teaching templates to support diverse classroom environments.
Sheikh Mohammed stressed that the goal is not only to teach the technical side of AI but also to build ethical awareness and critical thinking around its implications. “We want our students to understand AI’s foundations, risks, and societal impact — and to engage with it responsibly.”
The initiative builds on last year’s announcement by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, who introduced a training programme to certify teachers in AI applications. That programme supports the Dubai Universal Blueprint for Artificial Intelligence (DUB.AI), a strategic framework to embed AI across all sectors of life and governance.
By integrating AI into the national curriculum, the UAE reinforces its position as a regional leader in innovation, aiming to cultivate a generation of tech-savvy, ethically grounded students ready to shape the world of tomorrow.
