In a powerful statement on X (formerly Twitter), former Labour Party Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reacted strongly to the arrest and ongoing detention of controversial online influencer, VeryDarkMan (VDM), expressing deep concerns about Nigeria’s democratic direction.
“The recent developments in our nation continue to raise serious concerns about the direction we are headed as a democracy. The tension in the land, aggravated by hardship, is being needlessly fueled by our attitude to the rule of law and human rights,” Obi wrote.

Obi described the arrest of Martin Vincent Otse (VDM) as troubling, even if technically legal. He criticized the manner of the arrest, likening it to an abduction — an approach he said evokes fear and opens the door for criminal elements to copy such tactics.
“When Nigerians can’t differentiate between lawful arrests and unlawful abductions, our national security and accountability suffer,” he warned.
Obi drew attention to a pattern, citing past instances where even judges — custodians of justice — were similarly disrespected, weakening citizens’ trust in legal protections.
He also highlighted the economic fallout of such incidents, particularly the backlash against GTBank, allegedly connected to VDM’s case. He emphasized the need for security agencies to act with transparency to avoid reputational damage and worsening investor confidence.
“Was it impossible to invite Mr. Otse in a civil, transparent, and legal manner?” he asked.

Obi didn’t stop there. He raised the alarm over allegations of the forced adoption of the NANS President, questioning the independence of student leadership and warning against silencing youth voices.
“Oppressing young voices — whether by force, patronage, or intimidation — is a dangerous path that must not be normalized.”
In closing, Obi called for a renewed commitment to justice, civility, and institutional integrity:
“We must return to a Nigeria where justice is done and is seen to be done without theatrics or abuse… A new Nigeria is POssible!”
