In a significant legal development, four former housekeepers have filed a $50 million lawsuit against renowned Motown singer Smokey Robinson, accusing him of sexual battery and other serious offenses. The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, also names Robinson’s wife, Frances Robinson, alleging her complicity in creating a hostile work environment.
Allegations Spanning Nearly Two Decades
The plaintiffs, identified as Jane Does 1 through 4, claim that between 2007 and 2024, they were subjected to repeated sexual assaults by Robinson at his residences in California and Las Vegas. One woman alleges over 20 instances of rape, while another reports being assaulted more than 23 times during her employment. The women assert that Robinson used his celebrity status to intimidate and control them, often luring them into rooms without surveillance to commit the alleged assaults.
Accusations Against Frances Robinson
The lawsuit also implicates Frances Robinson, accusing her of failing to prevent the abuse despite being aware of her husband’s actions. The plaintiffs allege that she fostered a hostile work environment, including verbal abuse and the use of ethnic slurs. Additionally, the suit claims that the Robinsons violated labor laws by failing to pay minimum wage, denying overtime compensation, and not providing lawful rest and meal breaks.
Fear and Silence
The plaintiffs, all Hispanic women, state that they refrained from reporting the alleged misconduct due to fears of retaliation, loss of livelihood, and potential impacts on their immigration status. Their attorney, John Harris, described Robinson as a “serial and sick rapist,” emphasizing the courage it took for the women to come forward after years of silence.
Legal Proceedings and Public Response
As of now, no criminal charges have been filed, and Robinson has not publicly responded to the allegations. The lawsuit seeks $50 million in damages for sexual battery, assault, false imprisonment, gender violence, and labor violations. The case has garnered significant public attention, prompting discussions about workplace abuse and the challenges faced by domestic workers in reporting misconduct.
Broader Implications
This lawsuit highlights the complexities surrounding power dynamics, especially involving high-profile individuals and their domestic employees. It underscores the importance of creating safe work environments and ensuring that all employees, regardless of their status, have avenues to report abuse without fear of retaliation.
