Lydia Mugambe, a 50-year-old United Nations judge, has been sentenced to six years and four months in prison after being found guilty of enslaving a young Ugandan woman in the United Kingdom.
The verdict, delivered at Oxford Crown Court, saw Mugambe convicted on several charges, including conspiracy to breach UK immigration laws, facilitating travel for exploitation, forced labor, and conspiracy to intimidate a witness.
During the trial, prosecutors revealed that Mugambe lured the victim—whose identity remains protected—into the UK under false pretenses. Once in the country, the woman was forced to work without pay as a domestic maid and provide childcare, while being prevented from seeking paid employment. The court was told that Mugambe used her authority and status to exploit the woman “in the most egregious way.”
At the time of the offences, Mugambe, who also served as a High Court judge in Uganda, was pursuing a PhD in law at the University of Oxford. She was appointed to the UN judicial roster in May 2023, three months after her arrest by Thames Valley Police. Upon being confronted by authorities, Mugambe claimed diplomatic immunity and denied any wrongdoing, insisting the woman had willingly accompanied her to the UK.
