FG Declares Minna Airport Alternative to Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport

In a significant move aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure, the Federal Government has officially designated the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Airport in Minna, Niger State, as an alternative to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.

Strategic Significance of Minna Airport

The announcement was made by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during the inaugural flight ceremony of Overland Airways at the Minna airport. Keyamo highlighted that the airport’s infrastructure, including its international-grade runway capable of accommodating large aircraft such as the Boeing 747 and 777, positions it as a viable alternative to Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

 Ongoing Developments to Support Operations

Governor Mohammed Umar Bago of Niger State emphasized the state’s commitment to developing the airport as a key economic hub. The state has invested in various infrastructure projects, including the construction of a modern terminal, an aviation estate with 500 housing units, a fuel dump, and a five-star Hilton hotel. Additionally, approximately 1,000 kilometers of road construction are underway to support the airport’s operations.

Economic and Regional Implications

The designation of Minna Airport as an alternative to Abuja’s airport is expected to alleviate congestion at the capital’s airport, especially during peak periods or unforeseen disruptions. This move is anticipated to boost economic activities in the North-Central region, promoting logistics, trade, and tourism.

Looking Ahead

With the official designation in place, stakeholders anticipate increased flight operations and investments in the airport’s infrastructure. The Federal Government, in collaboration with state authorities, aims to position Minna Airport as a strategic asset in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
