Abike Dabiri Calls for Release of Detained Nigerian Tourists in Cape Verde

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), has urged Cape Verdean authorities to release six Nigerian tourists detained upon arrival in the island nation. The tourists, aged between 25 and 31, traveled from Senegal to Cape Verde for vacation but were detained at the airport, accused of lacking sufficient funds, and had their phones confiscated.

Detention Details

The detained individuals—David James Udoh, Lily Dada, Oghenero Adaware, Sherifat Abimbola Ogundairo, Jesutomi Aina, and a travel agent affiliated with Irin Travels—were taken to an immigration deportation center. Reports indicate they are experiencing distress, with one individual reportedly having a medical condition without access to necessary medication.

NiDCOM’s Response

NiDCOM has expressed deep concern over the treatment of the tourists, emphasizing the need for humane and respectful handling. The Commission has called for their immediate return to Dakar, Senegal, for onward travel back to Nigeria. The matter has been reported to Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for diplomatic intervention.

Public Reaction

The incident has sparked reactions on social media, with users expressing solidarity and calling for the tourists’ release. Family members have voiced distress over the lack of communication and concern for their loved ones’ well-being. NiDCOM continues to advocate for the rights of Nigerians abroad and seeks the cooperation of Cape Verdean authorities to ensure the safe return of the detained tourists.
