In a deeply disturbing case from Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna State, a 7-year-old boy named Abubakar Sani has undergone a double leg amputation following severe abuse allegedly inflicted by his father and stepmother. The child was reportedly punished for stealing biscuits—a punishment that involved being tied up and scalded with hot water, leading to severe burns and eventual tissue decay.
Details of the Abuse
According to reports, Abubakar’s father, Sani Tanimi Maishago, tied the boy’s legs and poured hot water on them. Subsequently, with the assistance of the boy’s stepmother, he was locked in a room for over 20 days without adequate food or medical care. By the time authorities were alerted, Abubakar’s legs had become severely infected, necessitating amputation to save his life.
Government Intervention
The Kaduna State Ministry for Human Services and Social Development intervened after receiving reports of the abuse. Commissioner Rabi Salisu confirmed that both the father and stepmother have been arrested and are in police custody. They are expected to face charges upon the conclusion of the investigation.
Medical Condition and Recovery
Abubakar is currently receiving treatment at Barau Dikko Teaching Hospital. Medical professionals determined that both legs were unsalvageable due to the extent of the injuries and infection. The Chief Medical Director emphasized the need for artificial limbs to support Abubakar’s rehabilitation.
Public Reaction and Child Protection
This case has sparked outrage across Nigeria, with many calling for stricter penalties for child abusers and greater public awareness about children’s rights. The Kaduna State Government has reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on child abuse and is committed to ensuring justice is served.
