Sultan of Sokoto Labels Social Media a ‘Terrorist Organisation’ Amid Rising Concerns

In a recent address, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, described social media as a “terrorist organisation,” expressing deep concern over its role in disseminating misinformation and inciting unrest in Nigeria.

Sultan’s Remarks on Social Media

Speaking at the 17th Executive Committee Meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council in Maiduguri, Borno State, the Sultan emphasized the dangers posed by unchecked information spread through social media platforms. He stated, “Social media is a terrorist organisation that we must deal with. Somebody can sit in the comfort of their home and formulate stories, and you will consider that it is true.”

Call for Action

The Sultan urged security agencies to treat social media platforms with the same seriousness as other threats to national security. He highlighted the potential of these platforms to incite violence and disrupt societal harmony, calling for decisive measures to curb their negative influence.

Public Reaction

The Sultan’s comments have sparked a range of reactions from the public. Some individuals have criticized the comparison of social media to terrorist organizations, viewing it as an overstatement. Others acknowledge the concerns raised about misinformation but caution against broad generalizations that could infringe on freedom of expression.

Context of the Statement

Nigeria has been grappling with various security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, and communal conflicts. The proliferation of false information on social media has, at times, exacerbated these issues by spreading panic and misinformation. The Sultan’s remarks reflect growing apprehension about the role of digital platforms in influencing public perception and national security.

Moving Forward

The debate surrounding the regulation of social media continues to be a contentious issue in Nigeria. While there is consensus on the need to address the spread of harmful content, balancing this with the protection of civil liberties remains a challenge. The Sultan’s comments have reignited discussions on finding effective strategies to manage the impact of social media on society.
