FG Declares April 18th and 21st as Public Holidays for Easter Celebration

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially declared Friday, April 18th, and Monday, April 21st, 2025, as public holidays in celebration of Easter. This announcement was made to allow Christians across the country to observe the important religious event.

Why Easter Is Celebrated

Easter is one of the most significant festivals in the Christian calendar. It marks the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, which is a key belief in Christianity. Good Friday (April 18th) represents the day Jesus was crucified, while Easter Monday (April 21st) is observed as a continuation of the celebration of His resurrection.

These two days are usually observed with church services, family gatherings, and prayers for peace, unity, and love.

Government’s Message to Nigerians

While declaring the holidays, the government encouraged Nigerians—especially Christians—to use the season to reflect on the values of sacrifice, love, peace, and unity, which Easter represents. Citizens are urged to continue praying for the nation and remain law-abiding throughout the holiday period.

The Ministry of Interior emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence and religious tolerance among all Nigerians, regardless of their beliefs.

What This Means for Workers and Students

With the declaration of these holidays, schools, government offices, and many businesses will shut down operations on Friday and Monday. This gives workers, students, and families time to rest, reflect, and celebrate together.

Essential services like hospitals, emergency agencies, and security services are expected to remain on duty during the holiday period to ensure public safety.

Staying Safe During the Holidays

As people travel and celebrate, authorities are reminding Nigerians to stay safe, avoid reckless driving, and report any suspicious activity. Law enforcement agencies will be on alert to ensure everyone enjoys a peaceful and secure Easter celebration. The Easter holidays provide an opportunity for Nigerians to take a break from their daily routines and focus on spiritual renewal, kindness, and togetherness. As the country marks this religious occasion, it is a time to show love and extend helping hands to those in need.
