The Vatican has taken a significant step toward canonizing Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí, bestowing on him the title of “venerable” in recognition of his “heroic virtues.”
Often referred to as “God’s architect,” Gaudí is best known for designing the iconic Sagrada Familia basilica in Barcelona—one of Spain’s most renowned religious landmarks and a major tourist attraction.
In a statement released Monday, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis had authorized the decree, marking an early milestone in the Catholic Church’s formal process toward sainthood.
The declaration is the latest development in a long-standing effort to honor Gaudí’s devout Catholic faith and legacy. His deeply spiritual architectural vision has left a lasting mark on Barcelona and Catholic art around the world.
“It is a recognition not only of his architectural work but something more important,” said Cardinal Juan Jose Omella, the Archbishop of Barcelona, as quoted by AFP.
“He is saying you… amid life’s difficulties, amid work, amid pain, amid suffering, are destined to be saints.”
To be officially canonized as a saint, the next step for Gaudí would be beatification—typically requiring evidence of a posthumous miracle attributed to his intercession.
Gaudí, who was born in 1852, died tragically in 1926 after being struck by a tram while on his way to church. Despite his passing nearly a century ago, his influence lives on in the city he helped shape.
The Sagrada Familia, Gaudí’s most famous and ambitious project, has been under construction since 1883 and remains unfinished. Its elaborate design and intricate symbolism have earned it a place on UNESCO’s World Heritage list, along with several other Gaudí masterpieces scattered across Barcelona, such as Casa Batlló.
In 2010, the basilica was consecrated by Pope Benedict XVI, further cementing its spiritual and cultural significance.
Gaudí’s journey toward sainthood continues, with the Church now looking for confirmation of a miracle to advance his cause. If successful, he would be one of the few architects ever to be canonized.
