Peter Obi Explains Why His Visit to Benue State Was Cancelled

Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has finally addressed the reason behind the cancellation of his planned visit to Benue State.

In a statement released on Monday, Obi shared that he would typically refrain from commenting on such issues, considering the numerous challenges he has faced throughout his political journey. However, recent events led him to speak out and clarify the situation.

Obi had planned visits to both Plateau and Benue States as part of his outreach initiatives, focused on supporting internally displaced persons (IDPs) and promoting health and education projects. The visits, scheduled for Sunday, April 13 in Plateau and Monday, April 14 in Benue, were to include courtesy calls on the state governors, visits to IDP camps, and interactions with educational institutions, such as nursing schools.

According to Obi, he followed his usual protocol by reaching out to the Plateau State Government to inform them of his visit. The Plateau Governor welcomed the visit and provided the necessary support, allowing Obi to engage meaningfully with the victims at the Bokkos IDP camp.

However, Obi recounted a different experience when it came to his attempts to reach the Benue State Governor. Despite several attempts, Obi was unable to establish direct communication with the governor. He explained that after persistent efforts, he finally managed to speak with the Governor’s Aide-de-Camp (ADC), who informed him that the governor was in an important meeting but promised to return his call before midnight. This call, however, never came.

A few days later, the ADC messaged Obi, stating that he had been unable to reach the governor—an outcome that Obi found deeply troubling.

Undeterred by this setback, Obi decided to proceed with his trip to Makurdi, viewing the visit to the governor as a matter of courtesy rather than necessity. On the morning of the planned visit, Obi departed from Jos at 7 am, but upon reaching Akwanga around 10 am, his security team intercepted a press statement reportedly issued by the Benue State Government, effectively halting his visit. While still discussing the matter with his team, the same statement was forwarded to Obi directly by the Governor’s ADC.
