The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ending the importation of photovoltaic (PV) solar panels, revealing that the country has spent over N200 billion on imports so far.
This disclosure was made by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), Abba Aliyu, during a roundtable discussion in Victoria Island, Lagos. The event marked a strategic collaboration between the REA and the Lagos State Government, where both parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to bring electricity to rural communities in the state.
Aliyu emphasized the urgent need to shift from reliance on imported renewable energy equipment to local production, highlighting Lagos as the ideal hub to champion this transition.
“Over N200bn has been spent on the importation of PV panels into the country.
While there is a need for that importation, one of the key things our agency is striving for is domesticating the manufacturing of this renewable equipment. Lagos, being the centre of excellence, is going to lead a total war in that domestication,” he stated.
The move is part of the government’s broader agenda to boost local manufacturing, create jobs, and enhance energy access in underserved communities.
