Ex-Super Eagles Coach Christian Chukwu Dies at 74

Former Super Eagles head coach and ex-Nigeria captain, Christian Chukwu, has passed away at the age of 74.

The legendary Enugu Rangers manager died in the early hours of Saturday, though the exact circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear at the time of this report.

His longtime friend and former teammate, Dr. Olusegun Odegbami, confirmed the news via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Saturday.

“My Chairman has passed on. This morning, ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu, MFR, my bosom friend and teammate, one of the greatest football players in Nigeria’s football history, former captain and coach of Nigeria’s national football team, has passed on,” Odegbami wrote.

Born on January 4, 1951, Chukwu captained Nigeria’s national football team—then known as the Green Eagles—from 1974 to 1980. He famously led the team to its first-ever Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 1980, and also helped them secure runner-up finishes in 1976 and 1978.

A true football icon, Chukwu also steered Enugu Rangers FC to victory in the 1977 Africa Cup Winners’ Cup, cementing his legacy in Nigerian and African football history.
