Aimee Lou Wood Calls SNL Sketch ‘Mean and Unfunny’

Aimee Lou Wood, star of The White Lotus and Sex Education, has criticised a recent Saturday Night Live (SNL) parody of her, calling it “mean and unfunny” and suggesting the sketch veered into misogyny.

The British actress took to Instagram to express her disappointment with the impersonation, which used exaggerated prosthetic teeth and a pronounced accent to mock her appearance.

Wood, 31, said she was fine with being made fun of—”when it’s clever and in good spirits”—but added there “must be a cleverer, more nuanced, less cheap way.” She revealed she had received “apologies from SNL” after sharing her views. The BBC has reached out to SNL broadcaster NBC for comment.

Sketch Criticism and Reaction

The controversial sketch aired this week and imagined US President Donald Trump and his team vacationing at the fictional resort from The White Lotus. Wood’s character, Chelsea, was played by SNL cast member Sarah Sherman, who wore a brown wig, heavy prosthetic teeth, and spoke in an exaggerated accent.

In one moment referencing the actress’s dental gap, the character asks:

“Fluoride? What’s that?”

Wood said the sketch focused unfairly on her appearance, particularly her teeth.

“I have big gap teeth, not bad teeth,” she clarified.

“The whole joke was about fluoride,” she continued.
“The rest of the skit was punching up, and I/Chelsea was the only one punched down on.”

Though she emphasised she wasn’t targeting Sherman personally—”I’m not hating on Sarah Sherman, I’m hating on the concept”—she also criticised the performance, saying:

“I respect accuracy even if it’s mean.”

A Broader Message

Wood has been the subject of media attention in recent months due to her distinctive dental gap, especially following her role in The White Lotus. While she’s embraced her appearance, she noted the excessive focus on it has taken away from conversations about her actual work.

“It makes me really happy that it’s symbolising rebellion and freedom, but there’s a limit,” she said in a recent interview with GQ.
“I don’t know if it was a man would we be talking about it this much? It’s still going on about a woman’s appearance.”

Wood also reposted a fan’s comment that described the sketch as initially “sharp and funny” before taking “a screeching turn into 1970s misogyny”, adding:

“This sums up my view.”

She said she had received “thousands of messages” of support and was glad she had “said something.”

Family Support

After Aimee Lou shared her perspective, her younger sister Emily Wood posted her own message of support on Instagram.

Sharing a photo of the pair, she wrote:

“Out here personifying the word powerhouse.”
“The admiration I have for this woman is nuts. Beyond comprehension.”

Emily continued:

“The greatest big sister. My best human on the planet. Her authenticity and originality is incomparable. My god, we are really madly blessed to experience life on earth at the same time as her.”
