Prominent Nigerian politician and former Governor of Abia State, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has stated that while there is a need for an Igbo presidency, it should only come after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second term. His remarks have stirred political discussions across the country, especially within the Southeastern region.
Orji Kalu’s Position on Igbo Presidency
Speaking on the future of Nigeria’s leadership, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu emphasized that the Igbo ethnic group deserves to produce the next president, but he believes this should happen after President Tinubu completes his second term in 2027–2031.
According to Kalu, Tinubu has so far demonstrated capable leadership, and it is in the country’s best interest to allow him to complete his eight-year tenure before considering an Igbo candidate for the presidency. He stressed the need for political stability and continuity, arguing that Nigeria benefits more when leaders are allowed to fully implement their policies.
Calls for Igbo Presidency
The Southeastern region of Nigeria, predominantly inhabited by the Igbo ethnic group, has long advocated for the presidency, citing marginalization in Nigerian politics. Many Igbo leaders and groups, including Ohanaeze Ndigbo, have consistently called for power rotation to ensure that an Igbo leader emerges as Nigeria’s president in the near future.
Kalu acknowledged these sentiments but maintained that political strategy should be considered. He believes that the Igbo should work with Tinubu to ensure a smooth transition in 2031, rather than disrupting the current political structure.
Reactions from Political Stakeholders
Kalu’s statement has generated mixed reactions from different political groups and individuals:
Supporters of Tinubu have praised his remarks, saying they reflect political maturity and realism. They argue that it is necessary to maintain political stability and allow Tinubu to consolidate on his policies.
Pro-Igbo presidency advocates, however, have expressed disappointment, stating that waiting until 2031 further sidelines the Igbo people from Nigeria’s leadership. Many argue that the 2023 elections already presented a strong case for an Igbo president with Peter Obi’s campaign, and delaying it would be unfair.
Opposition politicians see Kalu’s comments as strategic positioning to align himself with the ruling party for future political benefits. Some believe his stance is more about personal political ambitions rather than the collective Igbo interest.
The Road Ahead: Will Igbo Presidency Happen in 2031?
While Kalu has voiced his opinion, the reality of an Igbo presidency in 2031 will depend on several factors, including:
Political alliances – The Igbo political class must build strong relationships with other regions to gain nationwide support.
Party structures – The APC, PDP, and LP will play significant roles in determining who gets the presidential ticket in the future.
Public opinion – The masses’ demands will influence political parties’ decisions. If the call for an Igbo presidency becomes stronger, it may shape the 2031 elections. While Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has positioned himself as a supporter of the Igbo presidency, his proposal to wait until after Tinubu’s second term remains controversial. The debate over power rotation, political equity, and Nigeria’s future leadership will continue to be a hot topic in the coming years.
