NLC Shuts Down IBEDC Over Dismissal of 3,000 Workers

On February 18, 2025, the Oyo State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) halted operations at the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) in response to the recent dismissal of over 3,000 employees. The protest, led by NLC Chairman Kayode Martin, saw union members barricading the entrance to the IBEDC headquarters in Ibadan, effectively shutting down the facility and causing significant traffic disruptions in the Challenge to Dugbe area.

Demands for Reinstatement and Fair Treatment

The NLC is demanding the immediate reinstatement of the terminated workers and the full implementation of the national minimum wage. Chairman Martin condemned the actions of outsourcing agents associated with IBEDC, accusing them of exploiting workers through unpaid wages and unjustified salary deductions. He emphasized that over 3,000 dedicated employees have been unjustly dismissed, exacerbating unemployment and potential security issues in the state.

Appeal to Government Authorities

The union has called on Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and other relevant stakeholders to intervene in the matter. They warn that the mass layoffs could lead to increased insecurity and social challenges within the region. The NLC has outlined seven key demands to IBEDC management, including the implementation of the new minimum wage, regularization of outsourced staff, provision of adequate healthcare services, and payment of outstanding allowances.

Impact on the Community

The protest led to significant traffic congestion, leaving many commuters stranded for hours. As of this report, IBEDC has not issued an official response to the NLC’s demands. The situation remains tense, with the potential for further industrial action if the issues are not promptly addressed.
