Tragedy Strikes Ibadan: Unraveling the Night of Explosion, Deaths, and Destruction

In a shocking turn of events, the city of Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State in Southwest Nigeria, was rocked by a massive explosion on Tuesday night, causing widespread panic and devastation. The incident, centered around Adeyi Avenue in Bodija Estate, has left the community in fear, with reports of casualties, injuries, and significant damage to properties.

The Impact of the Explosion

The explosion, which occurred around 7:44 pm, sent shockwaves across a 15 km stretch, affecting areas such as Ologuneru, Apete, New Garage, Bashorun, Akobo, Sango, and Eleyele. Disturbing videos shared on social media depict the aftermath, showing houses and cars far from the blast site also heavily damaged.

Eyewitness Accounts and Uncertain Causes

Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing experience, with one individual stating, “We heard a loud bang around 7:30 pm. Dominoes scattered, Ace Mall in Bodija destroyed.” However, as of Tuesday night, the police were unable to confirm the cause of the explosion, and a search for victims was ongoing.

Emergency Response and Medical Assistance Appeal

Dr. Chinonso Egemba, a Nigerian medical doctor and social media influencer, urged medical personnel in Ibadan and nearby areas to mobilize and assist the victims. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) announced that relevant government agencies were on high alert for rescue operations, involving the police, DSS, civil defense, Red Cross, Fire Service, and the local security outfit, Amotekun.

Govnor Makinde’s Response and Attribution to Criminal Activities

Late into the night, Governor Seyi Makinde addressed the situation, revealing that the explosion was a result of criminal activities. He confirmed two fatalities and 77 injuries, promising to cover medical bills for the affected individuals and provide temporary accommodation for those whose homes were destroyed.
