Nigerian music star David Adeleke, known professionally as Davido, has publicly retracted his earlier criticism of Osun State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Abba, following violent clashes in the state. Initially, Davido accused the police chief of failing to uphold the rule of law during a politically charged crisis. However, after further reflection, he acknowledged the efforts of the police and other security agencies in managing the unrest.
Background of the Osun State Crisis
The unrest in Osun State was triggered by attempts from sacked local government chairmen, elected under the All Progressives Congress (APC), to reclaim their positions despite court rulings ousting them from office. This led to violent confrontations and reported casualties.
Davido’s Initial Reaction
In the heat of the violence, Davido expressed his anger on social media, blaming the police for not acting decisively. He wrote, “Mr Commissioner, respect the rule of law!!! You are not madder or crazier than us!!”
Reversal of Stance
Upon further review, Davido recognized the complexities involved and the efforts of the police in maintaining order. He stated, “I now see that the issue is more than that of the Commissioner of Police or other security chiefs. The needless killings today angered me so deeply that I thought they should have been nipped in the bud. Yet, I can see that the security agencies, led by the Commissioner of Police, put in their best and deserve commendation.”
Call for Peace and Rule of Law
Davido extended condolences to the families of the victims and urged security agencies to redouble their efforts to sustain peace. He emphasized the importance of allowing the rule of law to prevail and ensuring that the upcoming local government elections are held peacefully.
