The Lagos State Government has announced that several major roads will be closed for eight hours to facilitate the smooth running of the Lagos City Marathon. The highly anticipated sporting event, scheduled to take place this weekend, will see thousands of athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and spectators gather in the city.
Road Closures and Alternative Routes
The affected roads will be closed from 5:00 AM to 1:00 PM, during which motorists will be required to use alternative routes. The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has advised residents and commuters to plan their journeys ahead of time to avoid unnecessary delays.
A statement from the government detailed the affected areas, including:
Third Mainland Bridge
Ikorodu Road
Awolowo Road, Ikoyi
Ozumba Mbadiwe Road, Victoria Island
Lekki-Epe Expressway (up to Lekki Phase 1 Gate)
To minimize inconvenience, designated alternative routes will be provided, and traffic personnel will be deployed to manage the flow of vehicles.
Public Advisory and Safety Measures
The Lagos State government has urged residents to cooperate with security and traffic officials, emphasizing that the temporary closure is necessary to ensure the safety of both participants and road users. Emergency response teams, medical personnel, and law enforcement officers will be strategically positioned along the marathon route to handle any emergencies.
In addition, the government has encouraged public transport users to make necessary adjustments as commercial vehicles will also be affected by the closures.
Economic and Tourism Boost
The Lagos City Marathon is not only a sporting event but also a significant economic and tourism driver for the state. The event attracts international and local athletes, boosting business activities in the hospitality, retail, and transportation sectors.
Speaking on the event, the Lagos State Commissioner for Sports stated:
“The Lagos City Marathon is a globally recognized event that places Lagos on the international sports map. We appreciate the patience and cooperation of residents as we host yet another successful edition.”
Public Reactions
Reactions to the road closures have been mixed. While many residents understand the significance of the marathon, others have raised concerns about traffic congestion and accessibility issues. Some commuters have expressed frustration over the temporary disruptions, urging the government to improve traffic management during large-scale events. With the marathon expected to attract thousands of participants and spectators, Lagosians are advised to plan their movements ahead of time to minimize disruptions. The event promises to be an exciting showcase of athleticism, resilience, and community spirit.
