FG Reinstates Ikechebelu and Modebelu as UNIZIK Acting VC and Registrar

The Federal Government of Nigeria has reinstated Professor Joseph Ikechebelu as the Acting Vice-Chancellor and Victor Modebelu as the Acting Registrar of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka. This decision came after controversies and alleged irregularities in the appointment of university officials.

Presidential Approval and Official Announcement

The reinstatement was authorized by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and communicated via a letter from Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, Permanent Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Education. The letter emphasized that the appointment of Professor Bernard Odoh as the substantive Vice-Chancellor by the university’s dissolved 10th governing council was nullified due to procedural irregularities. Professor Ikechebelu has been directed to oversee the administration of the institution until a new governing council is constituted

Background to the Leadership Crisis

Professor Ikechebelu had initially been appointed as Acting Vice-Chancellor in June 2024. However, his tenure was abruptly interrupted in July when the university’s council controversially appointed Professor Bernard Odoh. This decision caused significant friction within the institution, prompting federal intervention. President Tinubu dissolved the governing council on allegations of illegal practices, marking a critical step in resolving the leadership crisis

Implications for UNIZIK’s Administration

With Ikechebelu and Modebelu back in their respective positions, the university is expected to experience administrative stability. Pending matters requiring council oversight are to be referred to the Federal Ministry of Education, ensuring adherence to proper procedures. This move aims to restore credibility and smooth operations within the university

Federal Intervention in Governing Councils

The Federal Government’s decision highlights the importance of maintaining transparency in the administration of tertiary institutions. It serves as a reminder of the boundaries between governance and management roles within universities, as stressed by the Federal Ministry of Education during the inauguration of various councils earlier this year
