FG Cautions Nigerians Against Negative Remarks About the Country

The Federal Government, through the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has urged Nigerians to avoid making negative remarks about the country. Speaking at the official unveiling of the Nigeria Reputation Management Group (NMRG), an event organized by the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) in Abuja on October 15, 2024, Idris emphasized the importance of promoting a positive national image.

Building a Strong National Brand

Idris highlighted that a strong national brand plays a crucial role in attracting talents, tourists, and investors, which are essential for national development. He stated that these elements combined would position Nigeria for growth and opportunities, while negative portrayals could hinder foreign direct investments and repel potential investors.

Impact of Negative Remarks on Investment

According to Idris, negative comments about the country could drive away investors, especially at a time when the nation is striving to secure foreign direct investment. He called for a balanced approach to how Nigerians speak about their country, particularly in the media, stressing the need for accurate and objective reporting with a sense of patriotism.

The Importance of Promoting Positives

The minister reiterated that consistently promoting the positive aspects of Nigeria would help strengthen its reputation and enhance its appeal on the global stage. He added that the reverse—a weak national image—would discourage investment, hinder talent acquisition, and negatively impact national development.

Hope For Everyone

The Federal Government’s message is clear: building and maintaining a positive national image is crucial for attracting the resources Nigeria needs to thrive. Idris called on Nigerians, especially the media, to focus on promoting the country’s strengths while remaining objective in their reporting.
