The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), currently under suspension by the United World Wrestling (UWW) due to a sexual harassment scandal and delayed elections, might need to prioritize the protection of women wrestlers to have the suspension lifted, according to the global governing body. The UWW had suspended the WFI in August for not conducting timely elections and had sought a fresh election due to sexual harassment charges against the then-president, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The recent election result, backed by Singh, has led to protests, including the resignation of top woman wrestler Sakshi Malik and the return of awards by male wrestler Bajrang Punia. UWW is evaluating the validity and organization of the election before considering lifting the suspension. The safeguarding of women wrestlers could be a key factor in the decision-making process.
