Tension has gripped the Tokulo community in the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) following the discovery of 12 corpses suspected to belong to bandits. The bodies were found on the morning of October 15, 2024, prompting fears among residents regarding safety and security in the area.
Local Reactions
Councillor Jerry Alkali, who represents the Igu Ward in the Bwari Area Council, confirmed the unsettling discovery to Daily Trust. He reported that residents had contacted him in the early hours of Monday, between 2 and 3 a.m., expressing their fear over the sound of gunshots ringing through the community.
“No one could afford to sleep at the time due to the tension caused by the development,” Alkali stated. It was not until morning that community members, while heading to their farms, stumbled upon the lifeless bodies lying outside the village along a road leading to the Pmape community in the Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State.
Insights from Residents
Another local resident, who chose to remain anonymous, remarked that none of the deceased were known members of the Tokulo community. This has led to speculation that the individuals may have been engaged in criminal activities or brought into the area before being shot dead, possibly by security forces.
History of Violence in Tokulo
The Tokulo community has experienced a troubling history of violence and attacks from bandits, resulting in the deaths of both locals and security personnel. This latest incident is part of an ongoing cycle of violence that has left many residents feeling vulnerable and unsafe in their own homes.
Official Confirmation and Investigation
An official from the FCT Special Anti-Kidnapping Unit confirmed the incident but refrained from providing further details on how the situation unfolded. As the investigation continues, there is growing concern over the safety of communities in the FCT and surrounding areas, as well as the need for effective measures to combat banditry.
