EFCC Operatives Raid Enugu Radio Station, Arrest Presenter During Live Broadcast

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) made headlines in Enugu State after raiding Urban Radio 94.5 FM and arresting a presenter, Favour Ekoh, during a live broadcast. The incident took place on Monday, October 14, 2024, at around 6:45 PM, while the station’s popular ‘Prime Time’ program was in progress.

Details of the Incident

Urban Radio, in an official statement, confirmed the invasion and apologized to listeners for the disruption of the show. The station alleged that EFCC operatives forcefully entered the studio, abducted the presenter, and seized communication equipment without providing any explanation for their actions.

According to the statement: “The Board and Management of Urban Radio 94.5 FM, Enugu regrets the abrupt halting and disruption of our program on Monday evening. Armed men identifying as the EFCC had barged into the studio and interrupted the live program ‘Prime Time,’ forcefully abducted our presenters and took away our communication equipment for reasons they vehemently refused to disclose.”

The management further assured listeners that they are following up on the matter and will continue to update the public as details unfold.

EFCC’s Response to the Arrest

In contrast, Dele Oyewale, spokesperson for the EFCC, defended the agency’s actions. He clarified that Favour Ekoh was arrested for alleged involvement in a Ponzi scheme that defrauded 103 Nigerians. According to Oyewale, the EFCC had issued several invitations to Ekoh, which she ignored, leading to her eventual apprehension at the radio station.

Oyewale also refuted the claims that communication equipment was taken during the operation. He emphasized that only the presenter was arrested, and no other equipment was seized during the raid.

The Alleged Ponzi Scheme

Favour Ekoh’s arrest is tied to allegations of her involvement in a Ponzi scheme that defrauded numerous individuals. Ponzi schemes have been a growing concern in Nigeria, with many citizens falling victim to fraudulent investment schemes promising high returns. The EFCC has been actively pursuing individuals and organizations involved in such activities to protect the public from financial fraud.

Apology to Listeners

Urban Radio has issued an apology to its listeners for the sudden interruption, expressing hope for a swift resolution to the matter. The station expressed deep regret for the unethical break-in and reassured the public that they are committed to ensuring the situation is handled appropriately.

As the situation unfolds, listeners and the general public will be closely watching for further updates regarding Ekoh’s legal proceedings and the resolution of the allegations against her.
