Amaewhule: Defected Lawmakers’ Seats to Remain Vacant, Says Rivers Government

The Rivers State Government has made its stance clear regarding the legislative seats of lawmakers who defected from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). According to recent statements, the vacated positions will remain unoccupied until the legal framework addresses the situation.

Amaewhule’s Statement on Vacant Seats

The Rivers State Government’s stance was delivered by the Commissioner for Information, Hon. Barr. Chinedum Amaewhule. He explained that lawmakers who switched political parties, particularly from the PDP, have effectively vacated their seats. These vacated seats will not be filled until the legal process runs its course, ensuring compliance with constitutional guidelines.

Constitutional Implications of Defections

The issue of political defection in Nigeria has always been a topic of heated debate. According to Section 68 of the Nigerian Constitution, any lawmaker who defects from the political party that sponsored them during the election should vacate their seat. Amaewhule emphasized that this provision remains binding, even as courts and other relevant bodies deliberate on these issues.

Government’s Firm Position

Amaewhule reiterated that the Rivers State Government would not entertain any attempts to disregard the law regarding the defected lawmakers. The affected seats will remain vacant until proper legal channels address the situation, thus ensuring that the rule of law prevails.

Legal and Political Consequences

The implication of leaving the defected lawmakers’ seats vacant is not only political but also legal. This situation emphasizes the importance of political loyalty and accountability within the democratic framework of the state. The Rivers State Government believes that upholding this principle is essential for maintaining the integrity of the legislature.

Future Course of Action

While the legal process is ongoing, Amaewhule noted that the government would continue to monitor developments closely. Until there is a clear directive from the appropriate legal authorities, no by-elections or replacements will be made for the vacant seats.

Future Concerns

The Rivers State Government has made its position clear regarding lawmakers who have defected from the PDP. Their seats will remain vacant, pending legal review, in line with constitutional provisions. This situation reinforces the importance of party loyalty and adherence to the legal framework guiding political representation.
