The Nigerian military has issued a direct challenge to former militant leader, Asari Dokubo, following his bold statements about having the capacity to shoot down a military helicopter and his claims of being able to contain the military. The military’s response, conveyed by Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, dismisses Dokubo’s remarks as unrealistic and has urged him to face them on the battlefield.
Dokubo’s Claims
Asari Dokubo, a former leader of the Niger Delta militants, recently made inflammatory comments, asserting that he could shoot down a Nigerian military helicopter flying near his residence. He further claimed that he had the power to counter the entire Nigerian military. These statements were seen as a direct provocation to the nation’s armed forces, sparking swift reactions from both the public and the military.
Military’s Response
In a strongly worded statement released on October 10, Major General Buba responded to Dokubo’s claims, calling them “laughable.” He explained that while Dokubo’s comments could easily be dismissed, it was important to clarify the military’s stance. “Now, to comment that he can shoot down military helicopters is laughable, and I am tempted to laugh about that,” said Buba. He also pointed out that the military operates professionally within the boundaries of democracy and would not act impulsively based on such statements.
Challenge to Dokubo
The military did not shy away from addressing Dokubo’s challenge, daring him to face them on the battlefield if he believed in his capabilities. “Our mandate is to confront him on the battlefield and take him out,” said Maj. Gen. Buba. He assured the public that Dokubo does not possess the military prowess he claims to have and emphasized that any such confrontation would lead to Dokubo’s neutralization.
Focus on Combating Terrorism
Despite Dokubo’s claims, the military remains focused on its primary mission—combating terrorism in various parts of Nigeria. Major General Buba clarified that the military’s efforts are directed toward defeating insurgents, whom he categorized as terrorists, whether they are called bandits in the northwest or insurgents in the northeast.
“Our enemy is the terrorists…we must label them for what they are,” Buba stated, emphasizing that the military continues its operations to neutralize these threats.
Military Achievements
In addition to addressing Dokubo’s claims, Buba also took the opportunity to highlight the military’s ongoing successes in combating terrorism. Over 300 terrorist commanders have been eliminated in the past three quarters, significantly weakening their operational capabilities. Buba mentioned that large quantities of weapons and ammunition have been recovered, further strengthening the military’s efforts to suppress insurgent activities across Nigeria.
Future Engagements
The Nigerian military has responded firmly to Asari Dokubo’s provocative statements, dismissing his claims and challenging him to test his capabilities on the battlefield. The military, while remaining professional and focused on its primary mission of combating terrorism, has made it clear that any threat from Dokubo would be swiftly neutralized.
