Lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has expressed his disappointment with Nigerians’ response to the recent increase in petrol pump prices. The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) announced a significant hike in the cost of petrol, raising it from N868 to N1,031 per litre in Abuja and other parts of the country.
Lack of Public Outcry
Adeyanju took to social media to address what he perceives as the public’s lack of response to the fuel price hike. He voiced his frustration at the silence and inaction of Nigerians, despite the steep rise in fuel costs. In his post, Adeyanju remarked, “Fuel is now N1,030, but nobody wants to chase clout by protesting. Everybody is waiting for someone else to start the protest.”
His comment reflects a broader concern that the Nigerian public seems reluctant to challenge or protest government policies, even when they significantly impact daily life.
The Price Hike: A Major Economic Concern
The increase in petrol prices has caused widespread concern, as fuel prices directly affect the cost of transportation, goods, and services in the country. The rise from N868 to over N1,000 per litre is expected to deepen the financial strain on many Nigerians, who are already grappling with economic challenges.
Despite these difficulties, the expected public protests or organized opposition have not materialized, leaving activists like Adeyanju questioning the collective will to demand accountability or push for change.
Call for Action and Accountability
Adeyanju’s remarks serve as a call to action for Nigerians to take a stand against policies they believe are unjust or harmful. He highlighted the need for greater public engagement and collective action, particularly in situations that directly affect the well-being of citizens.
A Growing Disconnect
The silence following the petrol price hike has sparked debates about civic responsibility and the role of the public in holding the government accountable. Adeyanju’s comments underline the growing concern about the disconnect between the severity of economic issues and the apparent apathy among the populace.
