He acknowledged the concerns raised by NPAN regarding policies affecting the newspaper industry, particularly those inhibiting local access to newsprint, pledging a thorough review to address these issues.
Furthermore, Tinubu addressed the challenges faced by travelers during the festive season, highlighting measures undertaken by the Federal Government to alleviate transportation costs. He specifically mentioned granting waivers to operators in air, road, and rail transportation systems, alongside efforts to reduce the price of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).
Expressing gratitude for the support and critiques received from various media outlets, Tinubu emphasized the importance of constructive criticism in governance. He affirmed his commitment to transparency, citing bold economic decisions undertaken by his administration, including the cessation of the petrol subsidy regime and the ongoing unification of foreign exchange rates.
Regarding the nation’s economic trajectory, Tinubu outlined plans to rejuvenate various sectors, focusing on investments in health, infrastructure, transportation, and education. He underscored the significance of catering to the needs of the less privileged, emphasizing the importance of investing in the nation’s youth for sustainable development.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, echoed the government’s dedication to nurturing a vibrant and responsible media landscape. He emphasized the pivotal role of newspapers in upholding transparency, accountability, and the free flow of information in a thriving democracy. Idris urged NPAN to engage in constructive dialogue with the government, aiming to address shared challenges and advance the nation’s interests.
NPAN President, Kabiru Yusuf, congratulated President Tinubu on his election victory and subsequent affirmation by the Supreme Court. He highlighted pressing concerns within the newspaper industry, emphasizing its pivotal role in supporting democracy and providing credible information amidst the proliferation of fake news.
Yusuf emphasized the industry’s significant contribution to employment, employing thousands of Nigerians across various roles, and its role as a cornerstone of democracy.
